On 14 October, 1947 at 10.22 am, Capt. Yeager flew the Bell X-1 at a speed of 670mph (Mach 1.06) breaking the sound barrier for the first time in human history.

Yeager christened the first X-1 "Glamorous Glennis" after his wife, as was his P-51's in WWII. There was an earlier version of the art work. This panel represents the one he flew on the historic flight.

Nose Art gave identity, character, and humor to impersonal machinery in ways that a serial number never could. It made the members of the crew feel special, believing that their plane and their painting would bring them luck and get them safely home.
